Born LUIS MIGUEL CORONEL GAMEZ in Tucson, Ariz., Luis Coronel has become one of the most successful Latin music artists of this generation. Little did Luis know that he was preparing for a career in music when he used his personal social networks to make friends, share photos and videos, and connect with a group of followers who would eventually become his fans. The biggest surprise came when he was a teenager and uploaded his rendition of Mexican songwriter Horacio Palencia’s hit, “Mi Niña Traviesa,” to his Facebook. The next day, Luis woke up to discover his version of the catchy love song had received thousands of likes, accidentally jumpstarting his career.
Since then, Luis has conquered Billboard charts, become a personality in several popular TV shows, and had numerous tours to different places with completely sold out presentations.
Thanks to his unique musical style, Luis became the youngest solo artist to reach the #1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart in 13 years (in the 21-year history of the list), an accomplishment that was made possible by “Quiero Ser Tu Dueño,” which has been certified as a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America.
In 2014, Luis celebrated his first award win at Premios Lo Nuestro, taking home the award for “Male Artist of the Year.” The awards have continued to roll in since. In 2015, Luis also took home key awards for “Best New Artist” at the Billboard Latin Music Awards and Premios de la Radio, and for “Artist with Most Potential Success,” as well as the “Best Love Song” award at Premios de la Calle. In 2016, he also won Premio Lo Nuestro awards for “Album of the Year – Mexican Regional” and ” Male Artist of the Year – Mexican Regional,” and the Premios Juventud award for “My Mexican Regional Artist.”
Luis has also received nominations to Premios Juventud for “Best Fashionista”; Premios de la Radio in the categories of “Los Reyes de la Redes” (The Kings of Social Media) and “Video Del Año” (Video of the Year) for his hit single, “Tal Como Eres”; Premios Bandamax as “Solista Juvenil del Año” (Young Soloist of the Year), “Regional Mexicano ft. Urbano” (Regional Mexican ft. Urban), “Video of the Year,” and “Most Influential Artist in Networks.”
Throughout his career, Luis has also shared the stage with music legends such as Aerosmith, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, Juanes, and Alejandro Sanz. In 2013, he participated in a successful U.S. tour with Gerardo Ortiz, Recoditos and Banda El Recodo.
Luis joined his colleague Prince Royce for the U.S. leg of his 2017 Five World Tour. The artist sent fans in a complete frenzy in each city he visited with groups of fans swarming toward the bus as it arrived the venues and people waiting in lines to catch a glimpse of their idol. The tour visited over a dozen cities all over the U.S., concluding in Miami, where Luis delighted the media with a promotional tour.
2017 also marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career, where he joined joined Sony Music with an exclusive recording contract. This alliance, along with Empire Records, provides Luis with a global platform that will propel him to the masses and help him become an icon of regional Mexican music and the hearts of millions of fans around the world.
Following much anticipation from his fans, Luis released his new album, “Ahora Soy Yo,” in October 2017. This is an album with which Luis showcases the biculturality that characterizes him, with songs composed by Luciano Luna, Joss Favela, Joey Montana and Edgar Barrera, as well as an explosive collaboration with Farruko. The album received a warm welcome to the industry, reaching the #1 position of Billboard’s Latin Album Sales and Regional Mexican Albums charts, and #2 in Billboard’s Top Latin Albums, making “Ahora Soy Yo” the second best performing Regional Mexican debut album of 2017.
In addition to his chart-topping albums, Luis has also released an assortment of hit singles, including “Para No Acordarme De Ella,” which topped the charts; and “Mentirosa,” which was released last November and instantly started trending on YouTube, earning more than 3 million views. Other hits from the Latin star include “Ahora Soy Yo,” “Tal Como Eres,” Dime Que Se Siente,” among others.
He was nominated for “Best Band Music Album” at the 2018 Latin GRAMMY Awards and also served as a presenter at the ceremony.
In 2019, Luis released “¿Pa’ Qué Nos Hacemos?” ft. Banda Los Recoditos, a unique collaboration in the genre, since these are not so common in Regional Mexican music. This single shows a more playful facet and was so popular that it eventually reached #1 on Monitor Latino.
Continuing with a successful 2019, in April, Luis participated in a special video for Amazon Music called “my story,” where he talked about his evolution as an artist, his goals and career path, connecting with his fans who are users of the platform. Additionally, he also participated in the week of conferences during the Billboard Latin Music Awards, where he was a speaker for the “Renovarse o Morir (Renew or Die)” panel, talking about his experience as a regional Mexican music artist in an industry dominated by the pop and urban genres.
In June, Luis released his first collaboration with Play-n-Skillz, “Que Bomba,” a song that fuses urban and cumbia rhythms with a fun music video set in the Old West.
Last year, Luis participated in the popular Premios Juventud once again. During the ceremony, he served as a presenter for the show and emerged triumphant as one of the winners of the night. Continuing to let his charisma grace the screens, in September he joined Estrella TV’s reality show, “Tengo Talento Mucho Talento” as a host for the season, and in October, he was a presenter on the popular show, Don Cheto Al Aire, announcing the nominees for Premios de la Radio.
In November, he delighted the audience of Premios de la Radio with a show-stopping opening performance that set the stage for the night. There, he also surprised his fans by giving them a sneak peak of his new single, “No Es Que Me Gustes,” which was released days later and its video reached 2 millions views within days. To close the month, during the season finale of ” Tengo Talento Mucho Talento,” Luis received a plaque commemorating his album “Ahora Soy Yo” being certified as a Gold Record by the RIAA.
To kick off 2020, Luis surprised fans with the release of a new single, “Sólo Un Poquito,” a romantic song that evokes deep feelings of love. This new single showcases a new sound that sought to delight the artist’s fan base. Also, in February, the artist began filming the second season of the popular Mexican TV show, “Tengo Talento Mucho Talento,” in which Luis serves as the host.
Continuing his stride, Luis gave his fans a small taste of his upcoming album with the release of another new single, “Próximamente Nada.” The song continued showcasing the completely different sound from everything the artist has done in the past, and clearly marks the beginning of a new era for Luis Coronel. “Próximamente Nada” was an immediate hit, dominating the various digital music platforms and being featured in Revista Selecta’s music column in the month of April.
